If you are a Calgary parent trying to make sense of "$15-a-day childcare," you are not alone. The headlines are encouraging, but the details — who qualifies, what you actually pay, and how to access it — are often confusing. This guide breaks it all down in plain language, using current information directly from the Government of Alberta.
What "$15-a-Day Childcare" Actually Means
The phrase comes from a national plan. In November 2021, Alberta and the federal government signed a roughly $3.8-billion agreement to dramatically lower childcare costs for families. The progress has been real: average fees fell from about $44 per day in 2021, to roughly $20 per day in 2022, to around $15 per day in 2024.
Then, on April 1, 2025, Alberta made an important change. Instead of an average of $15 per day, the province moved to a flat parent fee charged the same way across Alberta. This is the system in place today.
Key point: "$15 a day" is no longer a discount calculated on your income. It is now a flat monthly fee that eligible families pay regardless of how much they earn. The old income-based subsidy for children up to kindergarten age has been replaced by this flat-fee model.
What Calgary Families Actually Pay in 2026
If your child is kindergarten age or younger and attends a licensed daycare or family day home that receives affordability funding, here is the flat parent fee:

$230 per month for part-time care (50–99 hours/month)
Licensed preschool programs work a little differently: they receive up to $100 per child per month in affordability funding to reduce fees. Out-of-school care for kindergarten to Grade 6 is not covered by this flat fee, but those families may qualify for the separate Child Care Subsidy Program.
About the $10-a-day goal: You may have heard that fees were meant to drop to $10 a day. That remains the long-term direction of the federal-provincial plan, and in December 2025 the two governments signed a one-year, $1.17-billion extension of the agreement. However, as of this writing the flat fee in effect across Alberta is still $15 a day ($326.25/month). Always confirm the current fee with your provider.
Who Can Apply? (Eligibility)
The good news for most Calgary families: the flat fee is not income-tested. To qualify, your child must meet all of the following:

Be kindergarten age or younger

Be registered at an eligible licensed daycare, family day home, or preschool

Attend for more than 50 hours per month

If kindergarten age, be attending childcare during school hours
You will not receive the flat fee if your program does not hold affordability funding, if your child is registered for fewer than 50 hours per month, or if your child is in full-time kindergarten or older than kindergarten age.
How to "Apply": The Step Most Parents Get Wrong
Here is the part that surprises many families — parents do not apply to the government for the $15-a-day fee. There is no form to fill out at Alberta.ca. Instead, the funding flows through your childcare provider. Your steps are simpler than you think:

Find a licensed provider with affordability funding. Ask directly: "Are you licensed, and do you have an Affordability Grant agreement with the province?" Only these programs can offer the flat fee.

Enrol your child. Complete the provider's registration. The reduced fee is applied to your monthly invoice automatically — you pay the flat fee to the provider, not to the government.

Confirm your hours. Make sure your child is registered for more than 50 hours per month so your family qualifies for the flat-fee structure.

Explore additional support if needed. Families may also qualify for the Alberta Child and Family Benefit or, for out-of-school care, the separate Child Care Subsidy Program.
A quick note on extra costs: providers may charge for optional services such as meals, field trips, or supplies — as long as participation is genuinely voluntary. Always ask for a clear breakdown so there are no surprises.
